The holidays tend to put your home to the test. More people are cooking, gathering, staying overnight, and moving from room to room, which can make everyday frustrations much easier to spot.
If a whole-home remodel is on your mind for 2027, use those moments to your advantage. Pay attention to what feels crowded, inconvenient, or simply no longer works for your family.
Here are eight things worth adding to your remodeling checklist.

1. Pay Attention to Kitchen Traffic
Holiday cooking can expose the weaknesses in a kitchen quickly.
Pay attention to what happens when several people are cooking, serving, cleaning, and grabbing drinks at the same time. Are people constantly crossing paths? Does an open dishwasher block a major walkway? Is everyone gathered around the same small section of countertop?
The answer may involve more than making the kitchen larger. A better layout, improved work areas, additional prep space, or changes to how the kitchen connects with surrounding rooms can make a significant difference.
Add it to your checklist: Write down where people naturally congregate and where traffic starts to become a problem.
2. Notice Where You Run Out of Storage
You tend to discover the limits of your storage when everything comes out at once.
Serving platters may be stacked somewhere inconvenient. Small appliances take over the countertop. The pantry gets crowded, and there is no good place for the things you only use a few times each year.
Look beyond the kitchen, too. Entryways can become overwhelmed with coats and shoes, while linens and guest supplies compete for space elsewhere in the house.
Good storage is not simply about adding more cabinets. During a whole-home remodel, storage can be designed around what you own and where you actually use it.
Add it to your checklist: Notice what gets left on counters, floors, tables, and chairs because it does not have a practical place to go.
3. Look at How People Gather in Your Living Spaces
A room can feel perfectly comfortable for your immediate family and completely different with 15 people in it.
During your next gathering, watch where people choose to spend their time. You may find that everyone wants to be near the kitchen, but the existing layout separates the cook from the conversation. A formal room may sit mostly unused while another space feels crowded.
That does not automatically mean you need a completely open floor plan. The better question is how the rooms should connect based on the way your family lives.
Add it to your checklist: Pay attention to which spaces people use, which ones they avoid, and where you wish conversations could flow more easily.
4. Take a Fresh Look at Your Bathrooms
Bathrooms usually are not the center of a holiday gathering, but having guests in the house can reveal where they fall short.
An outdated powder room may suddenly feel more noticeable. A bathroom shared by several family members might lack storage or counter space. You may realize guests have to walk through a private part of the house simply to find a restroom.
Bathroom remodeling can address finishes, but function should be part of the conversation too. Layout, storage, lighting, privacy, and accessibility can all influence how well the room serves your family and visitors.
Add it to your checklist: Think about which bathroom guests use and what you would change if you were designing that space again.
5. Watch for Bottlenecks Between Rooms
Sometimes the problem is not a particular room. It is what happens between rooms.
A narrow doorway can become a traffic jam. The path from the kitchen to the dining area may be awkward when someone is carrying food. Guests entering through one door might immediately collide with people moving through the main living space.
These circulation issues can be difficult to recognize when only a few people are home.
A whole-home renovation gives you an opportunity to look at the floor plan as a connected system instead of treating each room as an isolated project.
Add it to your checklist: Notice the places where people have to stop, squeeze past each other, or take an awkward route through the house.
6. Consider Where Overnight Guests Fit
Hosting overnight guests can change your perspective on spaces you rarely think about.
Maybe a home office becomes a temporary bedroom every December. Kids give up their rooms. A finished basement has enough square footage for guests but lacks the privacy or bathroom access that would make it comfortable.
Think about how often you host and what would make those visits easier.
Depending on the home, the answer could involve reworking existing square footage, improving a basement, creating a more flexible room, or incorporating guest accommodations into a larger renovation.
Add it to your checklist: Write down what you have to rearrange when guests stay overnight and what you wish they had while visiting.
7. Notice When You Simply Need More Space
There is a difference between a home that could be laid out better and one that no longer has enough room for the way your family lives.
Holiday gatherings can make that distinction clearer.
You may want a larger kitchen and dining area, a more comfortable family room, a dedicated place to entertain, or space that serves a need your existing footprint cannot reasonably accommodate.
In those cases, a home addition may become part of the whole-home remodeling conversation.
Before assuming more square footage is the answer, though, it is worth exploring what can be accomplished within the existing home. Design should help determine if the current footprint can be used more effectively or if adding space makes sense for your goals.
Add it to your checklist: Identify the activities that consistently feel constrained by the size of your home.
8. Think About What Frustrates You After the Guests Leave
Some of the most useful observations happen after everyone goes home.
Where does the cleanup pile up? Which rooms require the most rearranging? Is putting the house back together a bigger job than it should be?
You may also notice problems that have little to do with entertaining. Perhaps the kitchen still feels inefficient on an ordinary Monday morning. The bathroom storage problem exists all year. The family room has never worked quite right, regardless of how many people are visiting.
Those are important distinctions.
A remodel should support everyday life first. Holiday entertaining simply gives you an opportunity to see your home under greater pressure.
Turn Your Holiday Notes Into a 2027 Remodeling Plan
After the holidays, look back at what you noticed and focus on the issues that affect everyday life. If several rooms share problems with layout, storage, circulation, or space, it may be worth considering them together as part of a whole-home remodel.
You do not need to have all the answers before starting the conversation. A design-build process can help determine how your priorities fit together and what makes sense for your home, budget, and plans for the future.
